The battle that produced the famous 1000 yard stare drawing, almost ruined the 1st Marine division and the career of Chesty Puller. It was so intense that the Marines had to hand it over to the Army and pull out for refitting. Yet it took the Army until after the fall of Iwo Jima to finally end the struggle, by which point the airfield on the island was no longer needed. The necessity of the battle was called into question even before the battle commenced and was later considered to be entirely unnecessary.
The Japanese were their typical stunning selves, no surrender, killing as many as they could though dying and suffering far beyond the Americans. More akin to World War One fighting except in the jungle the battle field could be quite chaotic, which the game system allows for. As there are no Zones of Influence you can walk past units without stopping, though they can shoot you to shreds as you pass.
And then there are the Umurbrogol Mountains, a twisting low range of lave cliff faces and pill boxes, into which the US has to go to kill the enemy. No line of site, hand to hand most of the way, very fierce fighting every turn of the game. Lot of maneuver space but in the end you have to go in and dig them out.
Wether you are Japanese or American, you will develop great respect for what you fore fathers did for you.
