Battle of Iwo Jima
Iwo
Jima
The bloodiest battle in the history of the United States Marines, and though the Japanese casualties were deaths, still more Marines were hurt than the defenders. And though every Japanese Soldier knew he was going to die, they wanted to give their homeland and families the time to prepare, and set an example to the Americans of what they could expect if they landed on the home islands.
Three Marine Divisions and 23,000 Japanese, one hundred thousand men, fought on a tiny island one-third the size of Manhattan. It took 36 days for the Marines to cross 7.5 miles, a distance that would only take a couple hours in peace time.
This battle has all the impacts of the battle, slugfests, disappearing Japanese units that pop back where they aren’t expected, superior US firepower that can’t find a target to hit, yet in the end prevails.
Put yourself in the battle that went down in history and had one of the most famous statues in the world created to commemorate it.
